Question....

At what age would you allow your child to go away to a camp for 7 days. At this camp you cannot supervise, it is in a different state and is an awesome opportunity? (On a side note, the parent can stay at a hotel nearby)

For me it would largely depend on the staff that would be supervising and the ratio of the staff to children. Also, how ready I think my child is since each child is so different at an age. I think that if I knew I could stay close that would help with my decision. good luck with this one Michelle - I am sure it is hard to make.

Hi MIchelle. I know it is very different here where I am but just to add my experiences my kids have taken off to one week camps since the age of 7- not each, only the ones that wanted to go. They asked to go---so far all of them have been to a week long camp away from home (more than an hour away) except the youngest one, who is only now 7. SHe has plans for an all girl camp this coming summer and will most liekly still be 7 at the time of the camp....

just my experiences. I know in the US is is very different. My oldest bring Cell phones with them that they can call in at night at certain times with the camps permission. SOme oms dont send their kids with them because they think it encourages homesickness etc.... I prefer that they are able to talk to me if they want. LAst summer, in fact, a counselor lent my daughter her phone so she could call me to just say hi cuz she wanted to "say hi to mommy" ahhhhhhhh
Good luck with the decision.

What kind of camp?

We sent our oldest off to camp (It was 6 days) when he was 8. It was a Christian camp up in the mountains in Colorado. We lived in Colorado at the time and it was only 2 hrs away from our house. (Teepee camp, they lived in Teepes for a week, fun!) He had a blast. I don't think he bathed the entire week, and was a walking zombie when we brought him home. (Obviously didn't sleep much either)

All in all, he had a great time and we'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I think it depends on the kid though.
